A well-fitted blazer is an important staple in every woman's wardrobe. But if you've been having trouble picking out one that looks perfect on you, check out these tips on choosing a style that fits your body just right.

A good blazer can be worn for so many situations. It can give you a professional look for a job interview or add a trendy, sleek flair when you head out with the girls. A poorly fitted blazer, however, will just leave you feeling bulky, so be sure to pick the perfect one for your unique shape!

Straight shape

If you have a straight shape, it means your bust, waist and hips are more or less in line. Lucky for you, plenty of styles look great on you. The key to finding the perfect look is to pick a blazer that nips in at the waist to create a nice hourglass shape. Your even shape also means you can have fun with playful patterns and colours. Pear shape

If you have a pear shape, it means your hips are wider than your upper body, so avoid blazers that fall to your hip line, as they will cause your hips to appear larger. Instead, look for blazers that are cropped to just above your hips or ones that fall just below your hip line. Blazers that have unique notes on the top, such as wide lapels or piping on the collar, also work because they draw the eye up and help balance out your shape. This contrast lapel blazer, for instance, will give the appearance of a thinner, more defined waist and also add a unique flair to your neckline (forever21.com, $40).

Inverted triangle shape

If you have particularly wide shoulders, you are what is called an inverted triangle shape. This body type isn't the easiest to find the right blazer for, but when you do track down the right one, it will be a spectacular look for you. The key is to find a blazer with minimal or no shoulder padding, as this feature will only accentuate the size of your upper half. Blazers that are less structured and made of flowing fabric will also help give your body a softer look. Check out the relaxed shape of this woven jacket (nordstrom.com, $101).

Apple shape

Women with an apple shape are rounder through the midsection and don't have much definition at the waist. If that's the case for you, your best bet is a blazer made of thinner fabric and that falls to below your hips. Avoid bulky fabrics, as they will add unnecessary width to your midsection. This unlined, straight-cut jacket, for example, will do a great job at evening out your torso and increasing definition at the waistline (hm.com, $30).

The average woman’s size in America is a 12/14. It’s been a while since I’ve taken a statistics class, but I’m pretty sure that indicates that around half of the female population is above that mark. So it only makes sense that with every denim post that I’ve written, I’ve gotten hundreds of emails and comments requesting tips on how to find great jeans for those in plus sizes.

Sadly enough, most denim designers blatantly ignore any semblance of fashion in plus sizes. The pocket placement is typically wrong, the styles are insultingly dated, the material is often cheap.

So I set out on a two month research journey with the help of four fabulous volunteers.  We visited half a dozen stores and used my own denim stash, tried on every pair of jeans in every store, and photographed them all.  I spent approximately 30 hours gathering, analyzing, and summarizing our findings.

We discovered that it may take some digging and a lot of dressing room action, but there are a few good pairs to be found.  My hope is that this project will help many women feel great relief that their problem may be their jeans, not their body.

Here’s a sample of our results, with more details to follow:

Subject A is a size 18.  She is petite, and expressed to me that “If I found jeans that fit, I was thankful for that and bought them.  I never even looked at the back, because I didn’t really think I had earned a good-looking butt.”  I am happy to say that she now feels differently:

It can be hard to find plus-size jeans, and even harder to find cute plus-size jeans that actually fit right! Here are few sites we recommend for buying women's denim in plus sizes:   

Search By Inseam is great because the site allows you to search multiple sellers at once, saving you time and money. You can select your exact inseam length, favorite brands and rise, and/or price range, and easily compare the results. Inseams typically range from 24 inches to 37 inches. New brands and styles are being added all the time, and you can sign up for notifications when a  new pair of jeans is added to the site that fits your specific criteria.

Old Navy now sells plus sizes online exclusively. You can find stylish styles in size 16-30 for around $30. Inseams come in 30, 32, and 34 inches. Shipping is free when you spend over $50, and returns are free to any Old Navy store.    

Avenue.com sells the popular tummy control jeans and several different brands. Sizes range from 14-32, and inseams are often from 28 to 35 inches.
  
Alloy.com is another one for tall plus-size women to check out because they offer 35 and 37 inch inseams, as well as the normal 30, 32, and 33 inch inseams. It's a teeny-bopper site, so prices are low and trendiness is high. Sizes go up to 25.  

NORDSTROM.com has their Plus-Size Shop with some great denim brands such as Jessica Simpson, Anne Klein, Jones New York, Karen Kane, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, MICHAEL Michael Kors, Nine West, Not Your Daughter's Jeans, Paige Denim, and more. Some brands go up to a size 26, and inseams up to 35 inches. Shipping and returns are free. 

Gap.com carries jeans up to size 20 and inseams up to 37 inches. Shipping is free on orders over $50. Returns are free on all orders. 

dELiA*s is another teen-centered site where the jeans are inexpensive. Their largest size is a 19/20, and inseams run from 26 to 37 inches. 

macys.com sells women's plus jeans up to a size 28 and carries brands like Levi's, Michael Kors, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Charter Club, Seven7, Not Your Daughter's Jeans, and more. Inseams typically range from 29 to 34, and returns are free to your local Macy's store.
